About Steve

I’m a left handed American engineer and musician born in East Point, Georgia (US).  I retired from full time corporate in 2016 and am a freelance engineer.

My most-used app is “Pro-Tools Shortcut Trainer”.  A courseware app to teach audio engineers how to use Pro Tools.  It’s been out a few years now and I update it a couple of times a year.

I’ve played, recorded and published music under the “Divertigo” moniker for much of my life.  Here is a playlist of some of that.

This year is 20 years since “Gentle Chaos” was released, so I’m having some of that remixed and put on Spotify before the winter comes and runs its source, along with other things.  I’ve stayed away from Spotify but have changed my disposition now.

The next app to be released is “The Deturbulizer”, which uses droning sounds for sleep or concentration, and occasionally says little things to you that you might want to hear, if you let it.

Here is a test version I’ve been messing with. Enjoy 20 minutes of drone. \m/

I also dig making original music that runs on 80s computers.  It’s a quirky and minimalist sort of art, where the sound chip can only make 3 sounds/bleeps at a given time.  This is the retro scene, where we make games and minimalist art, bound to the limitations of old machines.  The music is always made to go along with an artist’s work.  I work a lot with my friends Lobo and QzeR0w.   This music comes on sounding funny, but rocks at the same time.

The other reason I do this is that these retro projects have deadlines and collaborators, so things actually tend to get done.  Many of these are art projects called “demos” that get shown at specific events around the world.  We’re releasing a Judge Dredd game and another 80s metal-themed game this year, for which I did the music.  We just started working on a new cartridge game, which looks rad and funny.  Can’t wait to share some of that.

Here’s a playlist of music I’ve programmed for the SID chip.  Each song is about 2-4kb of data which tells the old 80s synth chip what to do.  The visuals and messaging can come off very strange, and this is all begotten from the esoteric nature of the esoteric 80’s pirate/hack scene.

I also post to the Instagrams from time to time.

I’m also in the Encyclopedia Metallum.
